Minimal conscious sedation describes a method that lowers your level of consciousness in order to allow you to be more relaxed during the procedure while not interfering with your ability to respond normally to tactile and verbal stimuli. Our dentists will be happy to discuss with you how minimal conscious sedation can benefit you during your dental appointments.
Unlike general anesthesia, oral conscious minimal conscious sedation presents very little risk and no uncomfortable effects. One of our doctors will give you a small pill to take about an hour before your appointment. This medication will make you feel as though your appointment is flying by, and although you will remain awake and in control, the sedative will put you into a state of deep relaxation while we tend to your dental needs. In many cases, minimal conscious sedation also gives our doctors a chance to combine multiple treatments into a single office visit. You will be able to return to your normal soon after your appointment, and as the medicine wears off, you will feel refreshed and ready for the day.
This minimal conscious sedation technique involves the inhalation of a colorless, odorless gas through a small mask that fits over your nose. Nitrous oxide begins to work after a few short breaths and will help you relax. A calm, comfortable feeling will come over you, but you will remain awake and alert, able to respond to requests and questions from our doctors. A few minutes after your treatment has ended, the nitrous oxide will wear off and you will be able to return to your normal routine.
If you have a phobia of anesthetic needles, dental drills, or pain, minimal conscious sedation can help you overcome your anxiety. Minimal conscious sedation dentistry is incredibly safe and has helped hundreds of our East Lake patients cope with, and in some cases even overcome, their dental phobias.
At the Center for Dental Excellence East Lake, we understand that some of our patients may not be comfortable.
